Well, the actual name of it (Astronomy) is the “ecliptic”…
The name offered to the constellations that the ecliptic runs via are named the “Zodiac” constellations… This is from Astrology, which I hope you know, is nonsense…

the ecliptic might be described as getting the apparent yearly path of the Sun amongst the stars. it passes via the twelve constellations of the Zodiac. in the month of march each year the Sun crosses the celestial equator, moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere of the sky. this is termed the Vernal Equinox. in September the Sun again crosses the equator, moving from north to south. this is the Autumnal Equinox. my answer is based on Astrology and not Astronomy.

It is named the ecliptic. Strangely adequate, people’s conventional birth signs are off by about 2 constellations as it is gradually shifted more than the past few thousand years.
